Fatehpur Sikri

On the way to the Taj Mahal, we stopped at this fortified ghost city. It was constructed in 1659 by Emperor Akbar in honor of Sheikh Salim, who foretold the birth of Akbar's first son. It is filled with Hindu, Muslim and Persian architecture. Akbar is credited with uniting India at this time. He himself had several wives, some Muslim, some Hindu, one Persian and one Christian. They were forced to abandon the city when the wells ran dry.
