This woman is doing laundry for families in Varanasi early in the morning. Ajah, our guide, said that the launry is washed in the Ganges, beaten on a rock, laid on the ghat steps or ground to dry, taken home to press and fold, then returned to the families for a modest payment. The job of beating the clothes less wet seemed most difficult and often the clothes are damaged in the cleaning.
