Old Varanasi

This is an example of the narrow streets which comprise much of Old Varanasi. Cars, rickshaws, and motorcycles (although a few tried) cannot travel feely here. In this ares, we went to be near a most ancient, and disputed, Shiva temple. Its spires were coated with gold. It was moved out of the original building spot when Muslims wanted to build a mosque on that site. This is why we had to leave all pens, phones and cameras behind at a little silk shop in order to go through security to to see the spire. We, as non-Hindus, were not allowed in. We got some sweet oils form the aromatherapy guy and got to see some monkeys (apparently scary creatures to those who live sround and with them).
